Welcome to the Young Voices area.

What is this project all about?

Young Voices is about young people having a say, and working with services as the experts on their own lives. There are lots of different ways to take part; from online surveys, to our Youth Ambassadors Forum. If you can't find the information you need on this page, please do contact us and we'd be happy to help.

We embrace all areas of additional needs, disability, neurodiversity and inclusion. Not everyone wants a 'label', and this is something we are respectful of.

Who is it for?

We embrace all areas of additional needs, disability, neurodiversity and inclusion. Not everyone wants a 'label', and this is something we are respectful of.

Everyone is an individual; many young people who have taken part in our projects would not describe themselves as having 'SEND' (Special Educational Needs and Disability) .You do not need to have a diagnosis or Education Health Care Plan to take part.

What about access needs and other ways to take part?

If you have access needs that aren't catered for by what we have on offer here, please do contact us. We also have a Wiki micro website you may find useful, as it presents information in a visual and accessible way. It is very important to us to remove barriers to young people taking part, and we are always happy to learn from you about what works and what doesn't.

You certainly don't have to be able to speak and/or write to have something to say!

Perhaps you , or someone you know, communicates non-verbally, or communicates best through pictures, signing or symbols? We have virtual 'scrap books', and a sensory story project you might be interested in. You can take a look at some examples on the links on this page. If you'd like to be able to edit and add to our books, please use the form below to request access to this project.

If you feel that having a peer 'buddy' would support you to take part in our projects, please use the form below to express your interest in this, and we will get back to you.

Who do I contact if I need help?

Please contact Rachel.Sadler@westsussex.gov.uk, for more information, to discuss any access needs you might have, request information in different formats or anything else we can help you with.

What about parent carers?

The West Sussex Parent Carer Forum can help you with enquires about parent carer voice. West Sussex Parent Carer Forum website

  • This form is for young people who are interested in our new Autism focus group . This group meets once a half term online ( we are also looking at some face- to- face meetings for those who would like them). We work with Jane, an Autism Advisory Teacher, on projects related to Autism such as awareness training for staff and sensory audits and resources for schools. We are also planning to work with professionals involved in the assessment and diagnosis of Autism to advise them on young people's experiences and work towards improvements.  All autistic young people aged up to 25 and living and/or going to school/college in West Sussex are welcome to join this group. We would especially like to hear from you if ;

    - You use augmented and alternative communication (AAC) such as PECS( symbols), Makaton, communication aids

    - You are in school years 5,6, 7 and 8 ( this is because we are looking at ideas to help make things better when preparing for and starting secondary school)

    - You go to a specialist support centre ( a base in school that is used by autistic students )

    - You have recently been diagnosed as being Autistic and would like to talk about your experiences ( we know this can be tricky when you have a new diagnosis but our group is very supportive and welcoming)

If you would like to take part, but are a bit anxious about it, or would like some support to get started you can let us know using this form.

  • We have used Bookcreator, an online platform, to create accessible online virtual scrap books where you can add photos, artwork, video, sound recordings, symbols and pictures, that represent the things that are important to your child/young person. Our scrap books are designed to help us build up a picture of young people in our county, including those who may not express their wishes, needs and preferences verbally. Anything you add to the scrap book will be seen by others adding to the book, and will be used to inform the work of Commissioners in improving services. The books will be shared publicly on our websites once completed .

You will need access to tablet or PC/laptop and internet access to add to the scrap books. It will not work on a smartphone. If you do not have access to these but would like to take part, please contact us for advice.

We will also use your ideas to create Makaton signed multisensory stories ( with a list of props you might have around the house and/or a story pack you can borrow to recreate it at home) which we will record and post on YouTube for us all to enjoy. The story will be built up using these themes…

    • Smells I like
    • Sounds I like
    • Places I like ( this could be somewhere like a beach for example, or perhaps somewhere in their home, school or youth group such as the sensory room, ball bit, book corner etc. )
    • Textures and things  I like to feel and touch
    • Things I like to play with
    • Colours  I like
    • Things I like to look at
    • I am good at…
    • What my family and friends think is great about me….
    • My favourite thing(s) to do…
    • What needs to change? Things that get in my way, or makes things more difficult for me and my family…
    • Got an idea for something not mentioned here? You can add your own pages with themes for the story.
