Update 23 January 2026

Consultation report published, TRO Consultation completed and Delivery scheduled for Easter 2026.

Introduction

Following a successful Community Highway Scheme (CHS) application by Worthing High School requesting a Zebra crossing to support pupils travelling to and from school, the following scheme has been designed.

Data collected by the school in advance of the CHS application indicated significant support from the school and wider community, and pedestrian surveys undertaken in April 2025 support there is a demand to cross in this area.

The proposed crossing will not only support this demand but support growth in walking and provide a formalised crossing point accessible to all, especially other local schools and pedestrians travelling to Worthing Station, into Worthing town centre or using local shops and facilities. On the basis of the pedestrian survey the crossing has been positioned to the east of St Lawrence Avenue, close to its junction with South Farm Road, as this recorded a higher number of pedestrian movements.

Scheme Objectives

The scheme aims to improve safety, continuity and usability for pedestrians by:

  • Installation of a new Zebra controlled crossing on St Lawrence Avenue, 20m west of its junction with South Farm Road.
  • Footway improvements including kerbing, surfacing, and tactile paving.
  • Resurfacing of the existing carriageway on approach to crossing.

Please see scheme designs in the box on the right side of the page for further details.

Scheme Timeline

The proposed works have been subject to a public consultation on the formal “Traffic Notice” which will followed the original consultation.

Construction is scheduled for Easter 2026 (please note we will update this timeline if anything changes).
