Hello and welcome to the self-harm in the community project page designed to inform you of the latest resources for professionals in West Sussex. This includes resources that can be shared with parents and carers and young people who engage in self-harming behaviour.

    Self Harm network workshops

    Join other professionals and volunteers to hear what is working for them and get updates on the latest initiatives, research, resources and policies. You will be able to improve your understanding and skills to prevent and respond to self-harm, increase your confidence in having conversations with pupils, parents and carers, and understand when and where to refer pupils. All those supporting young people are welcome to attend including teaching assistants, mental health leads, SENCOs, counsellors, school nurses and other services.

    This workshop aims to give you a better understanding of contributing factors, identify what support is required, understand and identify early warning signs, increase your knowledge of strategies and approaches to support and know where to access support.

    Self harm is very common alongside an eating disorder. This session will consider three common questions: Why is the person I am supporting with an eating disorder self harming, how should we best respond to self harming behaviours which are co existing with an eating disorder, and how can I manage my own feelings when supporting someone with an eating disorder who is self harming?

    West Sussex County Council are working with a number of health, care and voluntary sector organisations to carry out a needs assessment for LGBT+ children and young people in the county. We want to understand your experiences of mental health and emotional wellbeing and accessing support locally. This will help us improve local services. We want to hear from you if you live or study in the county of West Sussex, are 25 and under, and are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or exploring your sexual orientation and/or gender identity (LGBT+). The survey will take no more than 15 minutes to complete, and will help us to understand your views and experiences. The survey will close on the 4th June 2023.     As a parent we often find ourselves ill-equipped when it comes to dealing with, or even being aware of, our child's or young person's mental wellbeing, but help is at hand. West Sussex Mind are running a series of friendly, confidential and relaxed workshops where

    we will learn about the challenges to young people's mental health, gain confidence in having conversations about how they are feeling and thinking and explore ways to help your young person with any emotional difficulties.
