Why does this work have to take place?

The purpose of the scheme is to provide the missing link in the dedicated bus lane on Manor Royal connecting the A23 London Road in the west and Gatwick Road in the east.

This final phase of bus lane improvements along the western end of Manor Royal connects to earlier phases of bus lane and highway improvements already delivered along the corridor in partnership between West Sussex County Council, Crawley Borough Council and Manor Royal BID and is part of the Crawley Growth Programme. The first phase was successfully completed in July 2022 and the second phase completed in September 2023.

This final phase is being delivered with government grant funding awarded to the County Council as part of their Bus Services Improvement Plan (BSIP).

What work has to be done?

Constructing 350 metres of bus lane from the A23 London Road to the Crawley Business Quarter access on the northern side of Manor Royal.  The works will include amendments to the traffic islands, controlled pedestrian crossings, bus stops, and traffic signals at Compton Way.

What will the benefits be once it is finished?

The extension of the eastbound bus lane will provide a dedicated bus route that connects the A23 London Road with Gatwick Road.  It is designed to enhance the reliability of local bus services and reduce passengers’ journey times. The works will also aim to improve infrastructure durability and reduce maintenance cost over several years.

Will any roads have to be closed during the works?

Yes. Manor Royal will be closed for 9 nights between 21 to 29 May 2025.

What time of the day will the works take place?

    Daytime hours: 07.30am to 5.30pm

Nigh time closure hours: 8pm to 6am

The road is still closed but there is no work being carried out?

We may be waiting for the tarmac to cool off before we open up at 6.00am (during night closures).

    What disruption can residents expect?

Some pedestrian management will be necessary, but all will be clearly signed.

What disruption can motorists and bus pedestrians expect?

Some temporary traffic lights but we will control during peak flows.

I'm expecting a delivery during the works. What will happen?

    Deliveries will not be affected.

    What disruption can pedestrians expect?

Some pedestrian management will be necessary, but all will be clearly signed.

I have off-street parking. Will I still be able to use it?

Off-street parking will not be affected.

Will any diversion routes for traffic have to be put in place?

Yes, for the night closures and will be clearly signed.

Could weather impact the proposed works?

In extreme cases of prolonged rain, yes, but we aren’t expecting to be impacted.
