Walking and Cycling Improvements

This engagement ran from Monday 20th March to Sunday 30th April 2023. The engagement report (opens in new window) has now been published. Following the feedback received through this engagement exercise, including from Worthing Borough Council, it was decided to prioritise taking forward the Durrington-Goring scheme to public consultation (opens in new window). Opportunities will be considered in the future to bring forward the A24 Broadwater Road scheme. The original engagement webpage text has been retained below.

We are working to improve walking and cycling networks across West Sussex. By encouraging more walking and cycling, particularly for shorter journeys such as trips to school, we can help to create safer, more pleasant places in which to live, work and do business.

Underpinning our approach to improving the transport network within the county is the West Sussex Transport Plan 2022 – 2036 (opens in new window). It sets out how the County Council is intending to address a number of challenges, including climate change, congestion, public health and road safety. It also identifies our priorities for the Worthing area.

Two potential improvement schemes in Worthing have been identified as part of our Strategic Transport Investment Programme (STIP) which focus on cycling and pedestrian improvements. The schemes are:

  • Worthing Town Centre to Grove Lodge (Corridor 1)
  • Goring to Durrington (Corridor 2)

These corridors were identified as they have the potential to provide off-road cycle facilities on routes which connect key education, employment, public transport, services and development sites. These routes are also identified by Worthing Borough Council in the Local Cycling & Walking Infrastructure Plan (opens in new window).

We’re now seeking initial views on the types of improvements needed in these locations. The comments we receive will help inform the development of more detailed proposals and enable us to seek future funding opportunities.

In response to COVID-19 restrictions in 2020, the County Council introduced a temporary ‘pop-up’ cycle lane along the A24 Broadwater Road corridor. We have listened to the feedback received about that scheme and intend to develop solutions that respond to the concerns raised.

Engagement and Consultation

The purpose of this initial phase 1 engagement period is to raise awareness of the scheme proposals and provide the earliest opportunity to give feedback. The comments we receive will help identify key constraints, issues and opportunities that will be used to help shape the proposals. Subject to the feedback we receive, we hope to carry out a phase 2 consultation later this year.

We would like to hear your views on the proposed schemes, so please complete the questionnaire and provide your comments on the interactive maps.

The initial engagement period will close on Sunday 30 April 2023 at 23:59.

Corridor 1 and 2

Corridor 1 - Worthing Town Centre to Grove Lodge, Worthing

Corridor 1 is the eastern of the two routes and potentially runs from the A27 / A24 Grove Lodge roundabout junction, along the A24 through Broadwater, and could link into Chapel Road to the centre of Worthing, and towards Marine Parade via the A259 High Street.

Corridor 2 - Goring to Durrington, Worthing

The Corridor 2 route could connect West Durrington with Goring Seafront via Romany Road, Columbia Drive, The Boulevard, Shaftesbury Avenue, Worthing Leisure Centre, Robson Road, Trent Road and George V Avenue down to the seafront at West Parade.

Proposal

A range of improvements are being considered for both schemes, these include:

  • A combination of segregated cycle lanes/footways and shared-use (i.e. walk/cycle) paths where there are space constraints
  • New signalised crossings
  • Raised tables at some side road junctions to reduce vehicle speeds and make it safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road.

Have your say

We would like to hear your views on these proposed cycling and walking improvements by completing our survey (opens in new window). The engagement period is open until 23:59 on Sunday 30 April 2023.

Your feedback is important to us and will help shape the designs moving forward. Please take this opportunity to let us know what you think by completing our survey, which will only take approximately 10 minutes to complete. We also invite you to provide your comments on the Corridor 1 interactive map (opens in new window) and Corridor 2 interactive map (opens in new window).

  • CLOSED: This survey has concluded.

We’re working to improve walking and cycling networks and would like to understand your views on our early ideas to help shape the proposals.

As well as helping to improve the health, wellbeing and safety of West Sussex residents, it is hoped that improving routes for walkers and cyclists will support the local economy, reduce pollution, benefit users who do not have access to a car, and tackle climate change. This will help achieve national targets for cycling and walking to be the natural first choice for many journeys with half of all journeys in towns and cities being cycled or walked by 2030.

We want to hear your views on the types of improvements we are considering. We will use your feedback from this survey and the interactive maps, along with other information about the proposals, to develop a series of improvements that will be presented at a formal consultation later this year.

You can give your feedback on this initial engagement by:

    • Adding your comments directly on the interactive maps
    • Completing this initial engagement questionnaire

Before you complete this questionnaire, please read the information on the Initial Engagement website (opens in new window).

This survey will close on Sunday 30 April 2023 at 23:59
