This is the 2nd iteration of the most current Local Flood Risk Management Strategy (LFRMS) (2014 - 2019) and sets out over the years 2021 to 2026 how West Sussex County Council will undertake their flood risk management responsibilities and meeting the duties of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010.

Following the 2007 floods and the independent Pitt Review, the Act embodied local flood risk management into UK law. As part of this fundamental change in flood risk management responsibilities, West Sussex County Council became a Lead Local Flood Authority and is required to develop and implement a strategy to outline how local flood risk will be managed across the county.

Our strategy has been developed in collaboration with key stakeholders and we are now publishing this for wider comment should any interested parties wish to do so.

The strategy focuses on:

  • the risks of flooding from surface water, groundwater and ordinary watercourses
  • the clarification of which authority is responsible for what in relation to the management of local flood risk
  • the defined role of West Sussex County Council as Lead Local Flood Authority.

    West Sussex County Council Lead Local Flood Authority have a statutory duty to consult key stakeholders in relation to its Local Flood Risk Management Strategy under the Flood & Water Management Act 2010 and associated Flood Risk Management Regulations 2009.  We invite all interested parties to make any representations necessary by filling in and submitting your responses to the survey questions.  If you wish to submit any additional evidence to support your response then please contact us at FRM@westsussex.gov.uk  for further guidance.

    Flood Risk Management at West Sussex County Council will use this survey to collect some personal data to comply with a statutory duty to consult on the Flood Risk Management Strategy. This data will be processed in accordance with the 2018 Data Protection Act, the General Data Protection Regulations and any subsequent relevant data and will only be used for the purpose stated. The data we collect will be held securely on computer for a period of up to eight years before being appropriately destroyed. West Sussex County Council is registered as Data Controller (Reg.
