Why is this work required?

We are working to improve walking, cycling and public transport networks across West Sussex. By encouraging more walking and cycling, particularly for shorter journeys, we can help to reduce congestion on our already busy road network. We’ll also help to improve air quality and create safer, more pleasant places in which to live, work and do business.

Are the designs LTN 1/20 compliant?

The Government’s Local Transport Note (LTN) 1/20 (opens in  new window) provides guidance and good practice to local authorities for the design of high-quality cycle infrastructure.

The design proposals will be developed to meet these standards.

Where can I see the designs?

The design proposals for this phase will be published on this site on Monday 24th August 2026. These will be accompanied by an online survey and opportunities to give feedback.

There will also be a drop-in engagement event for the proposals on Tuesday 25th August between 2pm-4pm and 5pm-7pm on Lancing Beach Green.

Designs will be available to view at Lancing Parish Council Offices.

When will this work take place?

Phase 2 of the Lancing Beach Green Active Travel Improvements is currently at concept design stage. This stage is being funded by Active Travel England funding and will be running until late Autumn 2026.

Timelines for future design stages and construction will depend on further funding being secured. Any updates to this timeline will be shared with the community.

What is happening to the timber wall along the existing pathway?

Work is currently being done to the repair the timber wall adjacent to the existing footpath behind the beach huts. This work is being undertaken by the Environment Agency and is separate from this project.

Do the Environment Agency have plans for this area?

The Environment Agency manages Lancing Beach and Shoreham Beach and are responsible for the area’s coastal strategy. The Environment Agency have no immediate plans for change to the site area but we are consulting them alongside other key stakeholders as part of our design process.

How will this affect Lancing Beach Green

The design proposals are still being developed and any potential impacts on the Beach Green will be carefully considered as part of the design process. The previous design phase required around 2% of the green area to provide a segregated cycle path. This phase will similarly look to minimise loss of green space.

Please check back on this website on Monday 24th of August to see the initial design proposals and more detailed information.
