Introduction

We are working to improve the existing shared use cycle path footpath that borders Lancing Beach Green and would like to hear your views on our proposals. The route forms part of National Cycle Route 2 and the scheme parallels Route 200 identified in Adur District Council’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP). The scheme will segregate pedestrians and cyclists along a popular shared use path, which borders Lancing Beach Green, serves a number of local businesses and amenities, and boasts beautiful coastal views for local residents and visitors from outside the area.

The scheme promotes the segregation of pedestrians and cyclists, with a new cycle facility providing a high-standard, modern specification route that includes cycle priority over other users at side junctions. The new facility will be constructed on land donated by Lancing Parish Council, as they work in collaboration with West Sussex County Council to deliver the local improvement.

Scheme Objectives

The scheme aims to improve safety, continuity and usability for pedestrians and cyclists, by:

  • Converting the existing shared use cyclepath footpath to two separate, segregated routes compliant with national design guidance.
  • Installation of additional cycle facilities, including inclusive user group cycle stands and cycle aids.
  • Providing priority for cyclists at side junctions along the new segregated route.
  • Increased awareness of existing interconnecting Public Rights of Way (PROW) network and improvements for mobility challenged users.
  • Relocation and improved accessibility of several memorial benches situated on the Green.
  • Resurfacing the poorly conditioned surface of the existing path for improved usability by pedestrians and future lifespan, subject to securing additional funding.

Please see the detailed design drawings for further information.

Scheme Timeline

The scheme is currently in detailed design stage, and we are working closely with key stakeholders to finalise a design. The results of this survey will aid the development of the design and sourcing of funding for construction, aimed for the 2024/2025 financial year.

Funding and Next Steps

We have allocated Council capital funding to deliver the new cycle path scheme. We are also exploring opportunities to secure additional funding for the scheme, which features many improvements for both pedestrians and cyclists using the route.

Following the review of data captured as part of this survey, we will seek to finalise a detailed design and secure funding for construction, with a view to implementation ready for summer 2025
