FAQs
Why is this work required?
We are working to improve walking, cycling and public transport networks across West Sussex. By encouraging more walking and cycling, particularly for shorter journeys, we can help to reduce congestion on our already busy road network. We’ll also help to improve air quality and create safer, more pleasant places in which to live, work and do business.
Will any building work affect how the Cafe and other facilities are accessed?
Access to facilities and local business’ will be maintained at all times during construction. The existing seafront path will remain open for the duration of the works.
When will the work be undertaken?
Construction will commence on Monday the 3rd of March 2025 for a period of 10 weeks, concluding Tuesday the 6th of May 2025. A construction phase plan can be found on the main page or within the final designs folder.
Could weather impact the proposed works?
Weather conditions can have an impact on the scheme’s delivery, particularly during periods of inclement weather.
What time of day will the works take place?
Where possible, works will take place between 07:30 and 17:30 each day.
Why are you undertaking the works during the day?
Daytime working is the most efficient and effective approach. We cannot carry out work of this nature without significant impact on the local community but take many factors into consideration. These include:
• The disruption and disturbance that our works will have on residents, especially at night.
• The safety of our workforce, the local community, and the wider travelling public.
• Quality control.
We cannot carry out these works without generating noise and in order to ensure that we do not unduly disrupt nearby residents’ sleep, we have little alternative but to carry out as much of this work as we can during the day.
Will there be any impact on use of the green or car park during any building works.
The car park and facilities should all remain fully accessible, however temporary barriers may be used to protect users from working areas and equipment.
Are the designs LTN 1/20 compliant?
The Government’s Local Transport Note (LTN) 1/20 (opens in new window)(External link) provides guidance and good practice to local authorities for the design of high-quality cycle infrastructure.
Where can I see the plans?
The final designs are available to see in the final designs folder.
I want to speak to a member of the project team, what should I do?
You can either email any comments or questions to the team at highways.improvements@westsussex.gov.uk

How much of the green is lost?
The amount of green space being used as part of the proposals is minimal, once completed the pathways will be under 2% of the green area, in comparison the car park is nearly 11%. Wildflower planting has been incorporated into the design to improve biodiversity.
How do I report a fault or a problem on the highway?
The most effective way to report a fault or problem on the highway is to use our online reporting application with multiple options. For further information, please visit - Make an enquiry or report a problem with a road or pavement via the West Sussex Council website.
