Coaching for WSCC Colleagues
About
The information and resources on this page is for colleagues working for West Sussex County Council only.
Looking for a coach?
By completing the ‘ask for a coach’ form, you will be able to say what you are looking to achieve and the type of coaching you're ideally seeking. We will use this information to match you with a suitable internal coach. This may mean asking you to wait until a colleague is available.
Please complete the form in full, providing as much information as possible. This will help us to find the best possible match for your needs.
Before completing 'ask for a coach'
Explore whether coaching or mentoring is best for you
Check out the advice available in our Coaching and Mentoring Hub on The Point. You need to be logged into the WSCC network before heading over there.
Check your readiness for coaching
We encourage you to reflect on the statements in the readiness for coaching area on this page. Coaching is more likely to be effective when you agree with the ‘good fit’ descriptions and none of ‘not the right fit’ apply to your current situation.
Ask yourself
Q. What are my reasons for coaching?
- What do I want to achieve / be different as a result of the coaching?
- How will I know the coaching sessions have been successful (what will I be doing and how will I be thinking and feeling differently?)
- What impact will the coaching have on me, my team, WSCC?
Q. What am I looking for most in a coach?
- What style of coaching do I think will work best for me?
- How do I best learn?
- What is my learning style?
- If I have previous experience of coaching, what worked well and what was less effective?
Q. What else will it be helpful for me coach to know about me?
- Am I experiencing anything currently, or in the past, that might impact how I engage with my coaching sessions?
- Do I have any specific needs that the coach needs to take into account in what they do and how they do it?
Q. When do I hope to start my coaching?
What happens after I submit my 'ask for a coach' request?
It will go to the WSCC Organisational Development Team. As we look after our internal coaching pool, we can then look to match you with a suitable coach.
Good to know:
- To match you with the right coach, we will need to share the information you provide on the 'ask for a coach' with other coaches in the pool.
- The Organisational Development Team, and all internal pool coaches, work to a code of ethics which mean we will keep confidential the information you share throughout the coaching relationship. As a rule of thumb, we will only disclose information where you have explicitly agreed for us to do so, unless you share something that we believe is convincing evidence of serious danger to you, others or the organisation.
- Submitting your 'ask for a coach' request means you agree to these conditions.
- To provide you with the best possible coaching experiences, our coaching pool is made up of qualified coaches and coaches in training. This focus on quality means we have a small pool of coaches. As a result you may have to wait until a suitable coach becomes available. We will provide you with regular updates when this is the case.
Can I choose my coach?
When we have matched you with a potential coach, we'll put you in touch with each other for a 'chemistry call'. This is an informal conversation where you and your potential coach can explore if you are right for each other. If you choose not to work together, we will explore whether we can match you with someone else.
To best help me, shouldn't the coach have a similar background?
While helpful, having a similar background doesn’t guarantee that the coach will be effective. It’s more important for the coach to have the skills and abilities to help you transform yourself and acquire the skills and mindsets you need. The most helpful coach is one who listens to you and helps you reflect on your choices, behaviours, interpretations and judgements.
