The West Sussex Picture Books to Shout About! Award, now in its twelfth year, is a value-added package available to all West Sussex primary schools. Every year, teachers work alongside the Schools Library Service to select the four shortlisted books which will be read, shared, and voted on by children, with the winning book announced on World Book Day.
In 2025-26, we will be selecting one SLS-subscribing school to work alongside the Schools Library Service team to select the four titles for this year’s West Sussex Picture Books to Shout About! Award shortlist. This event will take the form of an approx. 1 hour in-school staff meeting. SLS staff will provide the books and host the shortlisting event in school. To ensure that the Picture Book Award follows its scheduled timeline, this event will need to take place on the week beginning 13th October 2025.
The submission period for shortlisting applications will close on Friday 12th September.
By taking part in the shortlisting event, teachers will have the opportunity to engage with new high quality children’s picture books, critically analyse texts against set Book Award criteria, and share their ideas with Schools Library Service staff.
NB. In order to take part, the school must subscribe to West Sussex Schools Library Service and commit to taking part in the West Sussex Picture Book Award 2025-26 at a cost of £95.00 per pack.
