Introduction to proposed scheme

Following cycleway improvements previously delivered within the village, we are now seeking feedback on a potential addition route, which would require the conversion of a footpath to a shared use cycle track.

This would affect the section of footpath 65Hu between St Georges Lane and Highfield Drive in Hurstpierpoint.

The affected section of path would be given a hard surface. Due to limited land availability it is proposed the path would be a nominal width of 2m.

We are asking you about this very early on in the development of scheme proposals because there are complex legal procedures that are necessary to convert a footpath to a cycleway. There is a high risk of failure, particularly if there are objections to the proposals. We therefore need to be very sure that there is a high chance of success before allocating resources to take the scheme forwards.

At this stage of our engagement there is no funding or timeline for the delivery of any improvement work.

Scheme Objectives

The scheme would aim to improve safety, continuity and usability for pedestrians and cyclists, by:

  • Providing a further section of cycle route linking the new cycle path through Hurst Meadow with roads to the east.
  • Provide a smooth hardened surface on the path suitable for all weather walking and cycling use, removing trip and slip hazards.

Please see designs for further details:

  • A plan showing the location of the footpath conversion to a pedestrian/cycle route.

Scheme Timeline

There is no current scheduling of the proposed works. This is subject to the outcome of this engagement.

Funding and Next Steps

How much will the scheme cost and who is paying for it?

A rough estimate of cost for the scheme would be of the order of £120,000. We would seek funding by Active Travel England, which is an executive agency set up by central government with responsibility for improving walking, wheeling and cycling routes in the UK.

What are the next steps?

Once we have an idea of the level of support for scheme, and importantly, whether there are any objectors to the proposals, we will review whether it is viable to proceed with the formal processes to convert the footpath to a shared use cycleway.

If we decide to proceed, we will produce a design for the proposals and submit a formal application to the Secretary of State. A further, formal consultation would be required as part of this process.
