School support needs as a result of the pandemic/partial school closures – specific focus on SEN & D
This is a survey for staff in educational settings working with pupils with SEN and Disabilities i.e. the SENCO or Inclusion Lead.
We are very aware that the impact of the last year on all learners is significant. However, we are also aware that learners with already identified special educational needs are likely to be more greatly impacted.
With this in mind, the teams within the Inclusion Service would like to consider how their expertise and knowledge can be effectively used to jointly support settings who are experiencing particular challenges associated with their learners with SEND.
We would like to hear about challenges that have occurred as a direct response to the most recent lockdown and the subsequent return to school. We are specifically considering learners whose needs were ordinarily comfortably supported at School Support but have been significantly impacted by the pandemic.
You may be aware that the pandemic has seen a significant national increase in the numbers of requests for EHC needs assessment. Whilst this is the correct route for some learners, it is important that pupils with temporary challenges associated with the pandemic are supported at a local level, and this impact reviewed before applying for an EHCNA. This will ensure the EHC process and associated resources are targeted at the appropriate children.
A local and timely response to the challenges is ultimately a more appropriate and efficient way of supporting these pupils and responding to their immediate needs. However, we recognise you might appreciate additional support or guidance to achieve workable solutions.
To help us consider how we can best work together to support you , it is important we obtain your feedback and suggestions about the challenges you are having and what you think might assist you.
If you are concerned about a pupil or group of pupils in your school and unsure on the best approach (having considered all existing support mechanisms) please consider completing the attached survey.
We will then analyse the responses and consider a cross-service response that will meet as many needs as possible.
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you that the teams within Inclusion continue to offer their usual services and you can find more details regarding these and other useful tools here:

The survey will run from Monday 22nd March to Sunday 16th April to capture concerns specifically associated with the full return to school.
Kind regards
Helen Johns
