Overview

A key objective of Our Council Plan is to keep people safe from vulnerable situations. How safe people feel in their environment affects lifestyle and travel choices they make. The West Sussex Transport Plan (opens in new window), supported by the Active Travel Strategy (opens in new window), includes provision for providing a safer, cleaner, more accessible transport network encouraging active travel (walking, wheeling, and cycling) and access to shared transport.

Our Council Plan (opens in new window) also includes a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) (opens in new window) for the reduction of people killed or seriously injured (KSI) in road traffic collisions. Deaths and injuries from road traffic collisions impose a significant economic, environmental, health, and social burden on society. A safer road environment is more likely to encourage people to make more active travel choices.

This Road Safety Strategy (opens in new window) sets out the County Council’s approach to road safety and to support active travel choices set against a background of Vision Zero, the internationally recognised ambition to eliminate all road deaths and severe injuries by 2050. It demonstrates our adoption and integration of Safe System, a widely accepted best practice approach to road safety and traffic management.

Safe System considers 5 key elements that contribute to reducing risk of harm to road users: Safe Road Use / Behaviours, Safe Speeds, Safe Roads and Roadsides, Safe Vehicles, and Post-crash Response. Applying Safe System is proactive, identifying and mitigating latent risks in the transportation system, and accepting that responsibility is shared across stakeholders and road users.

We want to hear your views about our approach to road safety and our vision for a safer road environment for everyone, free from people being killed or seriously injured.
