The recent episodes of extreme heat, including the Red Heat Health Alert 23 - 27 June, is something we have not experienced before in West Sussex, but which forecasters have advised is likely to happen again.

The WSCC Resilience and Emergencies Team (RET) met daily during that period, to coordinate the response across all services. We were part of these meetings and had the opportunity to discuss the challenges in our service, including the growing heat in many of our buildings. The daily meetings were also used by service leaders to seek advice on additional steps or actions that could be taken to mitigate the impacts of heat and maintain appropriate service delivery for customers.

Following the Red Heat Health Alert, Lead Managers did some rapid response work to create new Risk Assessments and guidance documents which were provided to Library Managers to support them in assessing impacts in their specific libraries, and to ensure we have a consistent approach to measures we can take on working days where heat is extreme.

Following lots of local conversations, we would like to give you the opportunity to feedback on your experience, so that we can contribute to wider council discussions and help inform planning for future episodes of extreme heat.
