The proposed expansion of Yapton CE Primary School

Summary of Proposals

To permanently expand Yapton C of E Primary School, for the start of the academic year 2028/9, from a 1 ½ Form Entry (45 places per year of age) to a 2 Form entry (60 Places per year of age) school.

Background

Yapton CE (Controlled) Primary School is a Church of England school located in the village of Yapton. The school caters for children aged 4 – 11 with a published admission number of 45 and a total capacity of 315 pupils.

Need for Change

The County Council has a statutory duty to provide sufficient primary and secondary school places for all children who need a place. Ensuring that the supply of school places meets demand remains a statutory duty of local authorities.

The demand for places at Yapton CE Primary school has been increasing and recent projected pupil forecasts for both the school, and the school planning area in which it sits, show a gradual increase in numbers starting school. The increase is largely due to the significant house building within Yapton and surrounding areas.

Funding for the expansion project has been secured by way of S106 legal agreements. Approval to allocate this S106 funding for undertaking the design work to develop a proposal for delivering the expansion of Yapton CE Primary School, and to fund the expansion project should it proceed, was given in December 2025 – decision CYPL15 (25/26) (opens in new window) refers.

The proposal

Yapton CE Primary School is a Voluntary Controlled School. The proposed permanent build expansion will accommodate an additional 15 pupils starting school (Reception year) in 2028 and for the following six years, increasing the overall capacity of the school from 45 places per year with a total capacity for 315 pupils to 60 places per year of age with a total capacity for 420 pupils.
