Phase 3 Public Consultation Results

What is the West Sussex Public Chargepoint Network?

West Sussex County Council along with its key delivery partners in the district & borough councils, Adur, Arun, Chichester, Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and Worthing, have signed a contract with Connected Kerb to deliver Electric Vehicle Charge Points (EVCPs) on-street and in public car parks.

The programme to install the EVCPs is funded through central government and private investment with zero cost to the councils.

Why are we doing this?

The public chargepoint network throughout West Sussex is designed with residents in mind who do not have access to off-street parking. Our objective for installing EVCPs in areas where there is little or no off-street parking is to enable residents to transition to electric vehicles by providing charging facilities, ideally within 500m of their homes.

Can residents ask for a chargepoint in their area?

We’ve already received around 1500 requests for chargepoints in West Sussex and your feedback is vital to help us build a charging network that benefits everybody.

Whilst we cannot guarantee that a chargepoint will be installed in the location suggested, it will help us establish demand and refine our plans.

What does this mean for residents?

The aim is to provide a public charging network for residents which is convenient, close to their homes, and where they can take advantage of off-peak tariffs through overnight charging. See Connected Kerb website for further details.

What are the main concerns raised by residents?

The main concern is about parking and the loss of any current on-street parking spaces. The county council does not currently enforce any of the on-street EV bays, therefore, any on-street parking arrangements remain unaffected. If the bays are in areas where there are parking restrictions such as permit parking areas, pay-and-display or waiting-time restrictions, this will still be enforced and are required whether charging a vehicle or not. Whilst the EV bays are accessible to all, we ask residents to be considerate of those who may want to use them to charge.

A further public consultation will be required should we look at enforcing restrictions on any of the EV bays in future.

What have we delivered so far?

Since the contract with Connected Kerb was signed in November 2021, the following EVCPs have been installed in West Sussex both on-street and in district & borough council car parks.

What is next?

We are currently working on the delivery of phase 3 of our programme on the sites that went through public consultation in 2024 (May - November). These sites are listed in the results table which shows which locations will be proceeding or not. This will see approximately a further 300 EVCPs delivered by April 2025.

LEVI (Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure) Pilot Project

This scheme is supported and funded by central government along with private investment funding from Connected Kerb to deliver a new phase of on-street EVCPs. The scheme will deliver for each site one active, dual-socket chargepoint with passive infrastructure for a further two dual socket chargepoints that can be commissioned later as demand increases. We will be looking to install this scheme across 100 locations countywide over the next 18 months.

The results table shows some of the sites from the recent consultation (2024) that have been moved into the LEVI Pilot Project. There will not be a further public consultation carried out for these specific sites that have already been identified and approved for installation.

To suggest a new location and to find out more, please visit the Connected Kerb website.
