Creating shared commissioning values and principles

We are a group of West Sussex County Council People’s Services commissioners and providers who are working together to agree a set of principles and values which will underpin our approach to commissioning. See more on who is involved below.

This is the space we are using to start to think about what good commissioning principles and values for West Sussex would look like. We invite you to join the discussion. Feel free to add your ideas on principles or values which are important to you and your organisation. You can also add comments or like other people’s ideas.

What do we mean by commissioning?

Commissioning is the strategic activity of identifying need, allocating resources, and securing a provider to best meet that need, within available means.

It typically has four key stages as shown in the diagram.Review, analyse, plan, do (commissioning diagram)

You might want to think about what good commissioning looks like at each of these stages to help you think about potential principles and values.

Why principles and values?

We want to improve the way we work together to achieve positive outcomes for people who access care and support.

To achieve this, we need to look at what is driving the commissioning practices (behaviours and actions) Practice, principles and values icebergthat we see. We aim to identify the principles and values which drive good commissioning, then work together to embed them in the way we work.

You don't need to worry too much about whether it is a principle or a value, just try to keep asking yourself why until you come to the core of the idea.
