Formulation Meetings - Feedback Survey
Formulation meetings are part of REACH processes for children stepping down to family life and for children supported under the REACH prevention offer. These meetings are intended to help bring the network together to think about the child’s family, their life events and to reflect on what beliefs, feelings and needs may be underneath some of the behaviours that we see above the surface. The aim is to develop a shared understanding across the child’s network of how to support children and their carers.
The meetings are online, 1.5 hours long and led by a clinical psychologist from the Attach team. Prior to the meeting, the psychologist and REACH worker will review and condense the child's social care chronology. This will be circulated ahead of the meeting and all attendees will be asked to read it, add anything missing and reflect on themes in the child's life ahead of the meeting.
We start the session by reviewing who is in the child's family and reflecting on themes in the child's life. Then we move on to using an iceberg metaphor to reflect on what behaviours are seen or experienced by those supporting the child and what beliefs, motivations, feelings and skills gap may be underneath the surface of these. Often during this process, we identify needs that may be hidden that necessitate a different approach to what might seem needed (e.g. a need for love and care hidden beneath rejecting or aggressive behaviours) and use this to inform care planning.
